Empowering local communities by training Maasai health workers
The Maasai communities of Same District in Northern Tanzania are often remote, and with few transport options, it’s very difficult for them to access a health care facility. Access to health services and facilities are vital to improve community members’ chances of a healthy pregnancy.
Working with a local organisation, Empower Tanzania, we helped train 30 Maasai women as community health workers by using a selection of our films shown on portable DVD players.
This empowered these Maasai women with the information they needed to deliver basic but essential care in pregnancy and childbirth. The Maasai health workers delivered health services to around 30,000 people from 21 Maasai communities, transforming the support available to these women in pregnancy and childbirth.
