Women’s access to family planning and safe abortion care services is a real and current global health problem. 225 million women who want to delay or prevent pregnancy have no access to family planning globally and there are 22 million unsafe abortions each year. The majority of these women live in under-resourced countries and more rural settings, and only 25% of women in Sub Saharan Africa have access to modern contraceptive methods.
Medical Aid Films has worked with The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to create a suite of counselling films to support Leading Safe Choices, a programme designed to improve the health of women and their children and decrease maternal mortality. The programme promotes best practice in postpartum family planning, comprehensive abortion and post abortion care services, by training and accrediting health care providers to be able to offer and counsel women on a greater range of family planning methods. It draws focus to long-lasting reversible methods such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants.

Leading Safe Choices plan to reach 1,400 Health Care providers across 10 facilities in South Africa and Tanzania by the end of 2017. To find out more about the programme please visit The Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists Leading Safe Choices resources page.
